Introduction
Regaining Control of a Complex Digital Portfolio
With over 15,000 employees, BAM ranks as one of the Netherlands' largest construction firms. Over the years, BAM's growth led to the creation of numerous websites and domains. But as the digital landscape expanded, many sites became outdated or abandoned. Despite using Excel sheets to track this portfolio, BAM struggled to maintain control over its digital assets, security, and technology updates. Nixon Digital stepped in to help BAM organize its digital presence. Our goals included mapping out every active website, assessing each for privacy and security performance, and restoring BAM’s control over its online footprint.
The Challenge
Tackling Decentralized Website Management
BAM’s open organizational structure allowed departments to request new websites freely. Over time, this decentralized approach led to a lack of centralized oversight, leaving BAM without a clear view or control center for its online assets. The issue became evident when BAM’s cybersecurity score began to decline, revealing the risks of an unmanaged digital portfolio.
With no effective system in place, BAM lacked a solid overview of the many websites created over the years. "If you want control, you need to start by mapping what you have," noted Jeroen Sanders, BAM’s Manager of Global HR-IT & Web. The urgency grew when BAM’s BitSight cybersecurity score—a measure of security performance—highlighted areas needing attention.
While BitSight flagged security gaps, the core challenge remains achieving full organizational control. With numerous tools and sources to reconcile, creating a comprehensive view of BAM’s digital assets is essential to address potential privacy, security, and performance issues.
The Solution
Centralized Website Oversight with Nixon’s Platform
Partnering with the Nixon Platform gave BAM a unified system to manage its entire digital portfolio. With Nixon Digital’s tools and BAM’s team effort, they mapped out every website, identifying outdated domains and addressing potential risks promptly. Centralizing data on website ownership, administration, and contractors provided BAM with a complete overview, ensuring quick access to critical information when issues arise.
Enabling Proactive Digital Optimization
With clear control over its website portfolio, BAM’s web team has shifted from operational support to driving strategic improvements in the digital customer experience. They now not only maintain oversight of digital assets but also actively encourage the business to optimize and innovate.
The Conclusion
Improved Security, Reputation, and Trust through Better Oversight
By gaining complete control over the website portfolio, BAM was able to quickly identify areas for security improvement. Addressing these issues allowed BAM to immediately increase their BitSight score. This higher score not only enhanced BAM's insurance coverage and tender position but also demonstrated their commitment to the safety and privacy of their visitors.
Digital Security and Governance Success
Having a complete overview enabled BAM to establish governance and policies that could be monitored by the Nixon Platform. The platform thoroughly checks for related privacy, security, and performance issues, and identifies who is responsible when something goes wrong. With this system in place, BAM is in control.
